Where it came from
Published in 1990 by the Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche, this scholarly volume serves as a critical examination of Giovan Battista Amico's sixteenth-century astronomical work. It places Amico's homocentric spheres within the complex intellectual landscape of the Renaissance, providing the necessary historical context for his efforts to reconcile Aristotelian physics with observed celestial movements.
The book is notable for including the Latin text of Amico's 'De motibus corporum coelestium' alongside Mario Di Bono's analytical commentary. Di Bono's research focuses on the transition between medieval cosmology and the nascent scientific revolution, highlighting how Amico utilized geometric models to address the limitations of traditional planetary theory before the widespread adoption of heliocentrism.
