Le voyage en ballon

Le voyage en ballon, published by Hachette in 1960, serves as the literary adaptation of Albert Lamorisse's film of the same name. Following the international acclaim of his earlier work, The Red Balloon, Lamorisse utilized his cinematic visual language to craft this story, which follows a young boy and his grandfather as they traverse the French countryside in a hot air balloon. The book functions as a companion piece to the film, capturing the whimsical yet grounded aesthetic that defined Lamorisse’s storytelling during this mid-century period of French cinema and literature.

The design of the volume reflects the Hachette editorial style of the era, emphasizing the integration of high-quality photographic stills from the film alongside the narrative text. Lamorisse, who was both a filmmaker and an author, approached the design with a director's eye for composition, ensuring that the printed page retained the same sense of aerial wonder and geographical exploration that audiences experienced on screen. It remains a notable example of the synergy between film and print media prevalent in 1960s French cultural output.
