Life Under the Jolly Roger

Life Under the Jolly Roger was authored by Gabriel Kuhn and originally published by PM Press in 2010. The book serves as a historical examination of the social organization and daily lives of pirates during the 'Golden Age of Piracy,' specifically between 1650 and 1730. Rather than focusing on sensationalized myths, the work draws on contemporary reports and trial documents to explore the egalitarian structures, labor conditions, and democratic practices that defined life aboard pirate vessels.

The book is designed as a scholarly yet accessible text that challenges romanticized notions of piracy. Kuhn, a writer and activist, seeks to bridge historical research with modern political theory by highlighting how pirates operated as a form of social resistance against the rigid hierarchies of the maritime powers of their time. The publication by ReadHowYouWant is part of a broader commitment to making academic and non-fiction works available in various accessible formats, reflecting the book's intent to reach a wide audience interested in counter-hegemonic history.
