Where it came from
Magick, written and illustrated by Elizabeth Hurchalla and published by TOKYOPOP in 2006, emerged during a period when the publisher was heavily focused on the 'Global Manga' movement. This initiative sought to bridge the gap between traditional Japanese manga styles and Western narrative conventions, encouraging North American creators to produce original graphic novels that utilized the aesthetic and pacing popularized by international hits of the era.
The work reflects the mid-2000s fascination with supernatural and fantasy themes within the young adult market. Hurchalla’s design and illustrative style prioritized the bold, high-contrast visual language typical of the OEL (Original English-Language) manga format. Upon its release, the book served as an example of the publisher’s commitment to fostering new talent and diversifying their catalog, though it remains a niche title within the broader context of the decade’s graphic novel output.
