Magician's Ward

Magician's Ward was published in 1997 as the final installment of the Mairelon the Magician duology, written by Patricia C. Wrede. Set in a fantasy version of Regency-era England, the novel continues the adventures of Mairelon, a traveling magician, and Kim, a young woman living on the streets of London who eventually becomes his apprentice. Wrede, known for her sharp wit and ability to blend historical atmosphere with high fantasy, wrote these books to explore themes of social mobility and the limitations placed upon women during the nineteenth century.

The design and tone of the series reflect the whimsical yet grounded nature of Wrede’s writing. While the earlier Tor editions were aimed at a growing young adult fantasy market, the narrative received praise for its clever world-building and the strong, pragmatic growth of the protagonist. Readers have long appreciated the series for its avoidance of traditional fantasy tropes, opting instead for a character-driven mystery that feels firmly rooted in the etiquette and social complexities of its period setting.
