Mahabharata of Krishna-dwaipayana Vyasa

The Mahabharata of Krishna-dwaipayana Vyasa, translated by Kisari Mohan Ganguli in the late 19th century, remains the only complete English prose translation of the Sanskrit epic to be published in its entirety. Commissioned by the Indian scholar Pratap Chandra Roy, the monumental project aimed to make the foundational Hindu epic accessible to English-speaking readers during the British colonial era. The translation process, which spanned from 1883 to 1896, was a labor of immense scholarly dedication that sought to preserve the cultural and philosophical integrity of the original text while navigating the constraints of colonial-era publishing.

This 2003 edition by IndyPublish.com serves as a modern republication of Ganguli’s classic work. By digitizing and reissuing public domain scholarly texts, IndyPublish sought to maintain the availability of significant literature for contemporary students and researchers. While the design is utilitarian, focusing on the preservation of the original text rather than aesthetic embellishment, it fulfills its purpose of providing a widely available, affordable resource for those wishing to engage with the complex moral, political, and spiritual themes of the Mahabharata.
