Malcolm Morley, new paintings and watercolors 1984-1986

Published in 1986 by Xavier Fourcade, this catalog accompanied the exhibition of Malcolm Morley’s work held at the Fourcade gallery in New York. Morley, a central figure in the development of photorealism and later neo-expressionism, created these pieces during a pivotal mid-career shift where he moved away from the mechanical precision of his earlier grid-based paintings toward a more gestural, emotionally charged style inspired by his travels and childhood memories.

The catalog captures a period of transition in Morley’s practice, showcasing a movement characterized by vibrant, dense color palettes and complex, often fragmented compositions. Designed to document the artist's evolving methodology, the publication serves as a key record of how the art world perceived Morley's departure from pure photorealism into a more subjective form of representation, solidifying his reputation as an influential painter who redefined contemporary figurative art in the mid-1980s.
