Marie Antoinette, princess of Versailles

Marie Antoinette, Princess of Versailles was originally published in 2000 as part of the Royal Diaries series, a historical fiction collection designed to introduce middle-grade readers to the lives of historical figures through the conceit of personal journals. Written by Kathryn Lasky, the novel explores the early life of the future Queen of France, focusing on her transition from an Austrian archduchess to the dauphine at the opulent, yet isolating, court of Versailles.

Lasky’s narrative approach sought to humanize a polarizing historical figure, emphasizing the social pressures and rigid etiquette that shaped the young princess before the onset of the French Revolution. The book was well-received for its accessible research and engaging voice, becoming a staple in school libraries and youth historical fiction curricula. The 2011 edition published by Salamandra represents the enduring international reach of the series, translating the narrative for Spanish-speaking audiences while maintaining the original illustrative style associated with the collection.
