Matthias Flacius Illyricus und seine Zeit

Wilhelm Preger published this comprehensive study of Matthias Flacius Illyricus in 1859 during a period of renewed academic interest in the Reformation era. As a Lutheran theologian, Flacius is best remembered for his work on the Magdeburg Centuries, and Preger sought to contextualize his often controversial career within the complex theological and political landscape of the sixteenth century.

The work was authored with a rigorous historical approach that mirrored the mid-nineteenth-century German emphasis on archival research and source criticism. By meticulously documenting Flacius’s life, Preger provided scholars with a foundational text that bridged the gap between purely ecclesiastical history and modern biographical analysis, remaining a reference point for Reformation historians into the present day.
