Mentality of Apes

The Mentality of Apes is a foundational work of comparative psychology, originally published in German as Intelligenzprüfungen an Menschenaffen in 1917. Based on Wolfgang Köhler's research at the Anthropoid Research Station on Tenerife during World War I, the book challenged prevailing behaviorist theories by demonstrating that chimpanzees exhibit insightful, goal-oriented problem solving rather than mere trial-and-error learning. This shift toward cognitive understanding fundamentally altered the field of primatology and the study of intelligence.

The 1959 Vintage Books edition represents a significant moment in the popularization of psychological literature in the mid-20th century. Vintage, an imprint known for bringing sophisticated academic and literary works to a broader, non-specialist audience, packaged Köhler’s rigorous observations in a format accessible to the general reader. The design choices of this era emphasized clarity and intellectual authority, cementing the book's status as a staple for students and enthusiasts of behavioral science for decades to follow.
