Mozart

Alfred Einstein’s Mozart: His Character, His Work was first published in 1945, representing the culmination of the musicologist’s lifelong study of the composer. Einstein, a cousin of Albert Einstein and a prominent German scholar who fled Nazi Germany, wrote this definitive biographical work while in exile in the United States. The text is celebrated for its deep synthesis of musicological rigor and historical empathy, shifting the focus from mere biography to an analytical exploration of how Mozart’s personal life and development directly informed his compositions.

The book is widely regarded as a cornerstone of mid-20th-century musicology, lauded for its ability to balance profound scholarly detail with an accessible, narrative prose style. In the decades since its release, it has remained a foundational text for both musicians and scholars. The Pan Verlag edition, often associated with subsequent reprints and translations, continues to be valued for its clarity and the authoritative perspective Einstein maintained throughout his career as one of the most respected Mozart experts of his generation.
