Neagoe Basarab - Princeps Christianus

Neagoe Basarab: Princeps Christianus, authored by Mihai-D. Grigore and published in 2015 by Peter Lang, serves as a scholarly re-examination of the 16th-century Wallachian ruler Neagoe Basarab. The work was conceived within the context of academic historical research to analyze the complex interplay between Basarab’s political authority and his deep commitment to Christian Orthodoxy. By focusing on his role as a 'Christian Prince,' the book situates him within the broader framework of European political theology and the specific cultural landscape of the Balkans during the early modern period.

The design and content of the volume reflect the rigorous standards of Peter Lang’s academic publishing imprint, known for its focus on humanities and social sciences. Grigore’s approach sought to move beyond romanticized nationalistic depictions of Basarab, instead providing a critical textual and historical analysis of his teachings and diplomacy. The book has been well-received among historians specializing in East European studies, praised for its careful investigation into the primary sources and for clarifying the intellectual legacy of one of Romania's most influential historical figures.
