Nightmare Inspector: Yumekui Kenbun Vol. 1 (Nightmare Inspector: Yumekui Kenbun)

Nightmare Inspector: Yumekui Kenbun, originally serialized in Monthly GFantasy starting in 2005, emerged during a period of rising interest in supernatural and psychological manga. Created by Shin Mashiba, the series follows Hiruko, a dream-eating investigator who operates from a hidden office to help clients overcome their recurring nightmares. The title reflects a tradition of Japanese folklore centered on the baku, a creature said to consume bad dreams.

Shin Mashiba utilized a distinct, minimalist art style characterized by sharp, angular character designs and a heavy use of shadow to cultivate an atmosphere of urban gothic mystery. When VIZ Media licensed the series for North American distribution in 2008, it was positioned as a sophisticated entry in their seinen catalog. Critics and readers generally praised the series for its episodic structure and the evocative, eerie aesthetic that set it apart from more action-oriented titles of the era.
