Where it came from
Published in 1838 by Hayez in Brussels, this scientific memoir by Barthélemy-Charles Dumortier emerged during a period of intense intellectual ferment in comparative anatomy and early evolutionary studies. The work serves as a meticulous examination of the cranial structural changes observed in orangutans, reflecting the nineteenth-century scientific community's growing obsession with morphological classification and the physical links between human and non-human primates.
Dumortier, a Belgian botanist and zoologist, utilized this treatise to contribute to the taxonomic debates of his era, emphasizing objective observation and precise anatomical description. The publication was characteristic of the scholarly monographs issued by the Royal Academy of Sciences and Belles-Lettres of Brussels, intended to provide rigorous documentation for the study of natural history. It is regarded today as a specialized artifact of pre-Darwinian physical anthropology.
