Novels (Adventures of Tom Sawyer / Tom Sawyer Abroad / Tom Sawyer, Detective)

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, originally published in 1876, emerged from Mark Twain's desire to remind adults of what they once were and how they felt, thought, and talked. This specific volume from the University of California Press serves as part of the definitive scholarly edition of Twain's works, established to restore his texts to their original intended form by stripping away the editorial alterations that occurred during the author's lifetime.

The design of this scholarly edition emphasizes textual integrity and academic rigor, reflecting the extensive archival research conducted by the Mark Twain Project. By including Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective alongside the original novel, the volume provides a comprehensive look at the evolution of Twain's iconic protagonist through different narrative styles and thematic explorations, from the nostalgic Americana of the first book to the burlesque adventure and mystery elements of the sequels.
