O Slovi︠e︡ o polku Igorevi︠e︡

The Tale of Igor's Campaign, or Slovo o polku Igoreve, is one of the most significant works of Old East Slavic literature, dating originally to the late 12th century. The 1875 edition by A. Smirnov represents a period of intense 19th-century academic interest in the manuscript, which had been rediscovered in the late 1790s. During this era, scholars and publishers worked to consolidate the text's linguistic structure and cultural importance, often producing scholarly editions to preserve the epic narrative of Prince Igor Svyatoslavich's failed 1185 expedition against the Polovtsians.

A. Smirnov’s 1875 publication is characteristic of the mid-to-late nineteenth-century scholarly effort to make historical texts accessible to a growing class of educated readers. While many editions of the period were designed with an austere, academic aesthetic, they were instrumental in solidifying the poem's status as a foundational pillar of Russian national identity. The design approach during this time typically prioritized clarity and readability for literary study, reflecting the prevailing desire among intellectuals to catalog and honor the pre-Mongol heritage of the region.
