Once upon a time in Shaolin

Once Upon a Time in Shaolin by Cyrus Bozorgmehr serves as an insider's account of the Wu-Tang Clan's singular, highly controversial music project of the same name. Produced as a lone copy of a double album encased in a nickel-silver box, the original recording was intended to be treated as a piece of fine art rather than a standard commercial release. Bozorgmehr, who served as a consultant for the group, chronicles the intense secrecy, the creative philosophy behind the project, and the global spectacle surrounding its eventual auction.

The book provides context for why the group chose to eschew modern streaming models in favor of a singular, exclusive artifact. It captures the tension between the artistic intent of the producers, Cilvaringz and the RZA, and the public's reaction to such an elitist approach to hip-hop history. By detailing the logistical and legal hurdles involved, the narrative offers a grounded look at one of the most enigmatic chapters in the history of music distribution and the evolving definition of a collector's item.
