Organ design and appraisal

Originally published in 1959, James Blaine Jamison’s Organ Design and Appraisal serves as a technical treatise intended for organists, builders, and enthusiasts of the mid-twentieth-century pipe organ. The text emerged during a period of transition in American organ building, reflecting a shift toward the American Classic organ style which sought to balance the clarity of Baroque-inspired design with the versatility required for Romantic-era repertoire.

Jamison wrote the book to provide a practical framework for evaluating existing instruments and guiding the construction of new ones. His approach emphasized structural integrity, tonal balance, and mechanical reliability, drawing on his deep experience in the field. The work has since been preserved by publishers like Creative Media Partners to ensure that these foundational principles of pipe organ architecture remain accessible to modern conservators and students of the instrument.
