Where it came from
Out of Avalon is an anthology of original short stories edited by Jennifer Roberson and published in 2001. The collection emerged during a period of sustained interest in Arthurian legend within the fantasy genre, gathering contributions from notable authors such as Diana L. Paxson, Michelle West, and Kristine Kathryn Rusch. The project aimed to explore the expansive mythology of Camelot through a variety of thematic lenses, ranging from traditional high fantasy to more intimate, character-driven narratives.
The editorial vision was to revisit the familiar tropes of Arthurian literature while allowing each contributor the creative freedom to reinterpret the iconic figures of the legend. This approach was intended to offer readers a fresh perspective on the cycle of myths, moving away from purely canonical retellings. Upon its release, the anthology was recognized for its diverse assembly of voices and its ability to maintain a cohesive atmosphere despite the varied writing styles present across the short stories.
