Padre Ignacio; or, the Song of Temptation

Padre Ignacio; or, the Song of Temptation was originally written by Owen Wister and first published in 1911. Wister, best known for his seminal Western novel The Virginian, set this shorter work within the context of early nineteenth-century California, exploring themes of religious devotion and human frailty. The narrative focuses on a Spanish priest living in a remote mission, whose structured life is interrupted by the arrival of a worldly traveler, forcing a confrontation between his ascetic vows and the allure of his former life.

The 2015 edition published by CreateSpace serves as a modern reprint of this classic piece of Western literature. It belongs to a wave of print-on-demand efforts to keep public domain works accessible to contemporary readers who appreciate Wister's stylistic focus on the American frontier. While the original turn-of-the-century publication was received as a sensitive character study, modern editions aim to preserve the historical atmosphere of Wister’s writing for a new generation of collectors and literary enthusiasts.
