Where it came from
Published in 2011 by Contrasto, this monograph serves as a definitive career retrospective for Paolo Pellegrin, one of the most significant photojournalists of his generation and a long-standing member of Magnum Photos. The volume was created to chronicle his extensive fieldwork, spanning over a decade of documenting human struggle and resilience in global conflict zones and marginalized communities. It functions as a cohesive archive of his distinct, high-contrast aesthetic that prioritizes emotional resonance over objective detachment.
The book’s design emphasizes the raw, visceral quality of Pellegrin's photography. By curating a selection that moves between the intimacy of personal portraits and the chaotic scope of war, the publication reinforces his reputation for finding quiet humanity amidst instability. Upon its release, the collection was well received by the photographic community, solidifying Pellegrin’s standing as a master of the subjective documentary tradition and serving as a key reference for students and practitioners of contemporary photojournalism.
