Pierre-Auguste Renoir, mon père

Originally published in French in 1958, this intimate biography was written by the legendary filmmaker Jean Renoir about his father, the celebrated Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Jean wrote the book to provide a personal perspective on the man behind the art, drawing from his own childhood memories and family anecdotes to humanize a figure often viewed strictly through the lens of art history. The work serves as a tender exploration of the creative process and the domestic life of one of France’s most influential painters.

The 1962 edition, later reissued by Mercury House, became a staple for those seeking a deeper understanding of the Belle Époque era. Critics and readers alike praised the biography for its lyrical prose and the depth of insight provided by someone who was both a son and an artist in his own right. The design of these editions often emphasizes the legacy of the Renoir family, prioritizing the narrative voice of Jean as a witness to the artistic transformation of his father's late career.
