Where it came from
Published in 2009 by World Scientific, this biographical work by Laurence Plévert chronicles the life and scientific contributions of Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, the French physicist and 1991 Nobel laureate. The book was developed to provide an accessible overview of his pioneering research in soft matter physics, specifically his work on liquid crystals and polymers, which revolutionized our understanding of complex systems and earned him the title of the Isaac Newton of our time.
The volume captures the intellectual rigor and curiosity that defined de Gennes’s career, detailing his transition from experimental physics to pedagogical mentorship. Plévert, a science writer who worked closely with the physicist, structured the narrative to balance technical achievements with personal reflections. The work was well-received within the scientific community as a definitive portrait of a man whose interdisciplinary approach bridged the gap between theoretical physics and industrial application.
