Where it came from
Published in 2008 by Compositori, this scholarly work focuses on the life and career of Properzia de' Rossi, the sixteenth-century Bolognese sculptor who remains one of the few women from the Renaissance era to receive significant recognition for her work in marble. Vera Fortunati Pietrantonio, a noted art historian specializing in the artistic culture of Bologna and the role of women in Renaissance art, curated this text to provide a comprehensive look at de' Rossi’s technical prowess, particularly her notable work on the facade of San Petronio.
The book serves as both a biography and a critical analysis, contextualizing de' Rossi's struggles and triumphs within the rigid social structures of the Cinquecento. The design and inclusion of plates reflect a commitment to accessibility for academic researchers and art history enthusiasts alike, aiming to elevate the historical profile of an artist who was frequently overlooked or romanticized in earlier centuries. It was received as a valuable contribution to the ongoing re-evaluation of female contributors to the Italian Renaissance canon.
