Pumpkin Jack

Pumpkin Jack was authored and illustrated by Will Hubbell, first published in 2000. The story serves as an educational and gentle exploration of the life cycle of a pumpkin, beginning with a child named Tim who carves a jack-o'-lantern, only to witness its inevitable decay in his garden throughout the winter. Hubbell’s narrative was designed to introduce children to concepts of composting and seasonal change, framing the process of rot not as an end, but as a necessary phase of nature's regeneration.

The book is recognized for its warm, realistic illustrations that track the transition of the pumpkin from a festive holiday decoration to a withered husk and, eventually, a new seedling. It has become a staple in primary school classrooms and nature-based curricula, praised for its straightforward, non-didactic approach to biology. The work remains a quiet, classic seasonal title, valued for its ability to bridge the gap between Halloween imagery and the botanical reality of the garden.
