Reinhold Niebuhr on politics, religion, and Christian faith

Published by Oxford University Press in 2010, this volume serves as a comprehensive intellectual biography of Reinhold Niebuhr, the influential twentieth-century American theologian. Richard Crouter, a professor emeritus of religion at Carleton College, wrote this work to synthesize Niebuhr’s complex relationship with political realism and Christian ethics. The text was developed to provide a bridge between Niebuhr’s foundational theological writings and his practical engagement with the geopolitical challenges of the Cold War era.

The book’s design and scholarly approach reflect the rigorous academic standards of the Oxford University Press 'Library of Theological Ethics' series. Crouter draws upon an extensive archive of Niebuhr's essays, sermons, and correspondence to track the evolution of his thought. Upon its release, the volume was well-received by academic critics for its ability to clarify how Niebuhr’s 'Christian realism' challenged both secular liberalism and utopian religious movements, solidifying its place as a definitive guide for scholars studying the intersection of faith and public policy.
