Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui

Bertolt Brecht wrote The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui in 1941 while in exile in Finland, intending to provide a sharp, allegorical critique of the ascent of Adolf Hitler. By transposing the political machinations of Nazi Germany into the gritty landscape of 1930s Chicago gangland politics, Brecht aimed to demystify the mechanisms of fascism and demonstrate that such political catastrophes were not inevitable, but rather the result of systemic corruption and public complicity.

The play features a design philosophy rooted in Brecht’s theory of epic theatre, utilizing alienation effects to keep the audience intellectually distanced from the characters. This specific 2013 Bloomsbury edition continues a long tradition of academic and performance publishing, presenting the text as both a historical artifact of mid-century political drama and a functional script for modern staging. Its enduring presence in theatre studies reflects its reception as one of the most intellectually rigorous satires of the twentieth century.
