Righteousness in Matthew and his world of thought

Righteousness in Matthew and his World of Thought was published by Cambridge University Press in 1980 as part of the Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series. Benno Przybylski wrote this scholarly work to address the theological significance of 'righteousness' within the Gospel of Matthew, specifically examining how the concept functions both within the narrative and in relation to the broader socio-religious context of the first-century Jewish world.

The book is a product of mid-20th-century critical biblical scholarship, a period marked by intense interest in redaktionsgeschichte, or redaction criticism. Przybylski sought to move beyond previous interpretations that viewed righteousness primarily as a purely Pauline concept, instead demonstrating the unique structural and theological weight Matthew places on the term. The work was received by the academic community as a rigorous contribution to Matthean studies, noted for its disciplined exegesis and systematic approach to the text.
