Where it came from
Published in 2000 by the Musée d'art moderne Lille Métropole, this monograph serves as a comprehensive record of the architectural practice of Roland Simounet. Released to accompany a retrospective exhibition, the volume was conceived to document Simounet's sensitive approach to modernism, characterized by his deep engagement with light, materiality, and the specificities of the landscape, particularly regarding his work in North Africa and France.
The book captures the ethos of Simounet, a student of Le Corbusier, who became renowned for his humanist architectural philosophy. It features archival sketches, site photographs, and critical essays that analyze his ability to integrate modern structural forms with vernacular traditions. Upon its release, it was lauded by the architectural community for providing a definitive scholarly look at a career that often prioritized understated, rhythmic spaces over the aggressive geometries of his contemporaries.
