Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a Musical Life

Jeffrey Green published this scholarly biography to address the historical neglect of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a prominent British composer of African descent who gained international acclaim during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The work emerged from Green's long-standing dedication to documenting the Black presence in Britain, aiming to synthesize disparate historical records into a cohesive narrative that accounts for both the composer’s artistic achievements and the racial dynamics of the Edwardian musical establishment.

The book is designed as a definitive biographical resource, reflecting Green’s meticulous research into primary archives, correspondence, and contemporary press accounts. By grounding the narrative in documented history rather than legend, the volume provides a clear-eyed assessment of how Coleridge-Taylor navigated fame and financial precarity. It is widely regarded by musicologists and historians as an essential contribution to understanding the intersections of identity and classical music history.
