Saraha's Spontaneous Songs

Saraha’s Spontaneous Songs, published by Wisdom Publications in 2024, serves as a scholarly translation and commentary on the Dohakosha, a foundational text of the Indian Mahamudra tradition attributed to the eighth-century yogi Saraha. This work aims to make Saraha’s cryptic and profound verse accessible to contemporary practitioners by framing his teachings within the context of non-dual realization and direct experience, moving away from purely scholastic interpretations.

The translation was authored by Klaus-Dieter Mathes, a distinguished professor of Tibetology at the University of Vienna. Mathes designed this volume to bridge the gap between historical philology and living spiritual practice, meticulously curating the nuances of the original Sanskrit and Tibetan manuscripts. It has been received by the academic and Buddhist communities as a significant contribution to the study of early tantric literature, praised for its rigor and ability to clarify the evocative, often elusive nature of Saraha's insights.
