Selected Writings of Otto Jespersen (Routledge Revivals)

This volume is part of the Routledge Revivals series, a collection established to bring back into print significant academic works that had previously fallen out of circulation. This specific edition presents a curated selection of writings by Otto Jespersen, a Danish linguist who remains one of the most influential figures in English philology and grammar. The works included were originally published across the early 20th century, a period during which Jespersen championed a progressive, evolutionary approach to linguistics, focusing on how languages adapt and simplify over time.

The selection highlights Jespersen’s foundational theories on syntactic structure and language acquisition, reflecting his desire to move linguistics away from rigid prescriptive rules toward a descriptive, logical analysis of human speech. While these texts were intended for an academic audience of historical linguists and students of English, their re-release in 2010 under the Routledge imprint ensured that his foundational insights remained accessible to modern researchers, maintaining their status as essential reading within the field of philological studies.
