Where it came from
Published in 2009 by Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai, Shururearisumu kaiga to Nihon serves as a critical exploration of the intersection between Surrealism and Japanese art history. Written by art historian Yutaka Hayami, the text was produced as part of an effort to provide a scholarly framework for understanding how Western avant-garde movements were adopted, adapted, and reinterpreted by Japanese painters during the early to mid-20th century.
Hayami’s analysis focuses on the thematic and visual tensions that arose when European Surrealist sensibilities met the unique cultural landscape of Japan. The book is recognized for its careful curation of artistic examples and its contribution to the study of modern Japanese art, providing readers with a detailed look at how global artistic discourse influenced local practice. It remains a frequently cited reference for those studying the complexities of the Japanese Surrealist movement and its enduring impact on contemporary visual culture.
