Simon Johansson

Simon Johansson's self-titled monograph, published in 2018 by the Swedish imprint Journal, serves as a comprehensive visual survey of the photographer's work. The collection focuses on the atmospheric and often desolate landscapes of rural Sweden, capturing the nuances of isolation and the quiet intersection of human presence and the natural environment. Johansson is noted for a contemplative approach to the medium, utilizing a deliberate, painterly style that emphasizes texture and the shifting qualities of Nordic light.

The publication was developed during a period where Johansson was gaining recognition for his ability to translate the mundane into something emotionally resonant. Journal, a publisher specializing in high-quality photography books, collaborated with the artist to create a layout that mirrors the pacing of a slow, wandering journey through the periphery of society. Upon its release, the book was received by critics as a significant contribution to contemporary Swedish photography, praised for its cohesive narrative structure and the technical maturity of its compositions.
