Stamm-Heyne's Ulfilas

This edition of Stamm-Heyne's Ulfilas, edited by Ferdinand Wrede and published by Schöningh in 1920, stands as a significant contribution to the study of Gothic linguistics. It serves as a pedagogical revision of the original work by Friedrich Ludwig Stamm, which remained the standard reference for the Gothic Bible translation for decades. Wrede, a noted German philologist, meticulously updated the text to reflect the contemporary scholarly consensus of the early twentieth century, ensuring its utility for students of Germanic philology.

The publication is grounded in the tradition of academic rigour prevalent in German universities at the time. By presenting Ulfilas’s fourth-century translation in a format accessible to researchers, Wrede provided a vital bridge between the ancient Gothic language and modern historical linguistics. Its design and structure, characterized by a structured glossary and grammatical commentary, reflect the methodical approach of the era's linguistic scholarship, ultimately becoming a staple resource for those exploring the development of Germanic languages.
