Stockhausen on music

Stockhausen on Music is a key compilation of essays and lectures by the pioneering German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, brought to English-speaking audiences through the editorial efforts of Robin Maconie. Published by Marion Boyars in 1989, the volume serves as a bridge for students and enthusiasts to understand the complex theoretical frameworks behind electronic music and serialism. It captures the essence of Stockhausen's avant-garde philosophy during a period when his influence on both classical composition and burgeoning electronic genres was reaching a global peak.

The book is designed to provide insight into Stockhausen's rigorous approach to sound, rhythm, and spatial composition. By organizing his disparate writings into a structured format, the publication allows readers to navigate his technical methodologies without needing to be professional musicians. It was received as an essential primary text for those studying the mid-20th-century avant-garde, praised for grounding Stockhausen's often abstract musical experiments in his own words and clear, pedagogical intent.
