Where it came from
Published in 2021 by Routledge, an imprint of Taylor & Francis, Jamie Brassett’s Superheroes and Excess emerged as a scholarly investigation into the intersection of comic book iconography and philosophical inquiry. The work explores how the figure of the superhero serves as a conduit for examining concepts of excess, power, and societal norms, positioning itself within the growing field of superhero studies rather than serving as a traditional fan history.
The design and content of the volume reflect a rigorous academic approach to popular culture. Brassett, a researcher in philosophy and design, utilizes the lens of excess to analyze the structural and moral limits of the superhero archetype. By grounding the text in critical theory, the author aimed to deconstruct how these modern myths function in late capitalism, leading to its reception as a dense, specialized contribution to the academic literature surrounding contemporary media.
