Where it came from
Tanooki! Volume I was self-published by Yohann Piga in 2010 through the Lulu Press platform, a service designed to empower independent creators to bring niche print works to market without the requirements of traditional publishing houses. The book emerged during a period of burgeoning interest in artist-led anthologies and digital-to-print transitions, serving as a platform for Piga to consolidate his illustrations and creative explorations of character design.
The volume is heavily informed by a fascination with the tanuki of Japanese folklore, blending traditional imagery with contemporary, stylized artistic sensibilities. Piga’s approach emphasizes a whimsical, expressive aesthetic that reflects the experimental spirit common among independent illustrators of the early 2010s. While intended primarily for a niche audience of art enthusiasts and fans of the artist's digital footprint, the work stands as an example of the personalized, small-run creative projects made possible by the growth of print-on-demand technology.
