Tarry Flynn

First published in 1948, Tarry Flynn is the only novel written by the renowned Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh. Set in rural County Monaghan, the book offers a semi-autobiographical account of life in the Irish midlands, characterized by a blend of lyrical description and the harsh, often claustrophobic realities of peasant life. The novel gained immediate notoriety in Ireland, leading to an obscenity trial that ultimately resulted in the book being banned for a time due to its perceived indecency.

The 1960 edition published by Devin-Adair reflects the international interest in Kavanagh’s work during the mid-twentieth century. Devin-Adair, an American publisher known for promoting Irish literature, helped introduce the narrative to a broader audience long after the original controversies had faded.
