Tarry Flynn

Tarry Flynn, published in 1948 by Pilot Press, remains Patrick Kavanagh’s only novel. Written during a period when the author was deeply immersed in the literary circles of Dublin, the work serves as a semi-autobiographical reflection on rural life in County Monaghan. Kavanagh intended the book to provide an unflinching, poetic, and often humorous depiction of the struggle between the limitations of peasant existence and the yearning for artistic and sexual liberation.

The novel’s reception was marked by immediate controversy, ultimately leading to a famous obscenity trial in 1954 after the book was banned by the Irish Censorship of Publications Board.
