The adventures of Dick Turpin and Tom King

Published by T.H. Lacy during the mid-19th century, this play text reflects the Victorian era's enduring fascination with the romanticized criminal figure of Dick Turpin. William E. Suter adapted the exploits of the famous highwayman for the stage, tapping into the popular 'Newgate novel' tradition that transformed real-world outlaws into folk heroes. These theatrical scripts were designed for both professional companies and the booming market for amateur domestic performance, providing audiences with high-stakes adventure and moral ambiguity.

The design of Lacy's acting editions was utilitarian, intended to be affordable and portable for theater practitioners. Suter's dramatization emphasized the camaraderie between Turpin and his companion Tom King, focusing on rhythmic dialogue and dramatic set pieces that were hallmarks of the era's melodrama. While the play was a staple of regional theaters, the historical reality of the figures it depicted was far grittier than the chivalrous, lighthearted portrait presented in these nineteenth-century scripts.
