Where it came from
Published in 1983 by Corvina, this scholarly study by Éva Kovács examines the exquisite Calvary of King Matthias Corvinus, a masterpiece of late Gothic goldsmithing housed within the Esztergom Cathedral treasury in Hungary. The volume provides a detailed art-historical analysis of the object, which serves as a definitive testament to the high level of Renaissance courtly craftsmanship commissioned under the patronage of King Matthias in the 15th century.
The book is regarded as a foundational text for those studying the intersection of ecclesiastical treasure and royal prestige in Central Europe. Kovács contextualizes the piece within the broader artistic movements of the time, documenting its intricate iconography and technical execution while exploring the survival of such significant liturgical works through the tumultuous history of the Hungarian crown lands.
