The cast stone

The Cast Stone was published in 2011 by Thistledown Press, a Canadian publishing house noted for its commitment to prairie literature and regional voices. Written by Harold Johnson, a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band and a lawyer by trade, the work reflects his dual interest in the intricacies of the Canadian legal system and the philosophical underpinnings of Indigenous knowledge. The book serves as a literary bridge, translating complex concepts of justice and communal ethics into a narrative framework accessible to a broader audience.

The narrative design of the book is characterized by its blend of storytelling and contemplative prose, characteristic of Johnson’s broader body of work which often examines the collision between Western structures and traditional wisdom. By grounding his writing in the specific geography and cultural context of Northern Saskatchewan, Johnson aimed to challenge readers to reconsider the definition of a cast stone as both a literal object and a metaphorical anchor for moral responsibility. The work was received as a thoughtful, if niche, contribution to contemporary Indigenous literature in Canada, valued primarily for its perspective on governance and human connection.
