The Christian Platonists of Alexandria

Originally published in 1886, The Christian Platonists of Alexandria is a seminal work by Charles Bigg, based on his Bampton Lectures delivered at the University of Oxford. The text explores the philosophical synthesis of early Christian theology and Neoplatonism, focusing on figures such as Clement of Alexandria and Origen. It emerged during a period of intense Victorian intellectual interest in the reconciliation of classical Hellenistic thought with emerging Christian dogma, serving as a critical scholarly bridge for theology students of the late 19th century.

The book is esteemed for its meticulous erudition and elegant, albeit dense, academic prose. Bigg sought to demonstrate how the Alexandrian school utilized Greek philosophical methods to deepen the understanding of the Incarnation and the Logos. The AMS Press edition, which utilizes this ISBN, serves as a modern academic reprint, ensuring that this foundational study remains available to contemporary scholars of patristics and the history of philosophy.
