The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle 1853 (Collected Letters of Thomas & Jane Welsh Carlyle)

The Duke-Edinburgh edition of The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle is a massive, ongoing scholarly undertaking initiated to provide a definitive, annotated record of the private correspondence between the Victorian essayist Thomas Carlyle and his wife, Jane Welsh Carlyle. This specific volume, published by Duke University Press in 2000, covers the year 1853, a period defined by the Carlyles' complex social dynamics, Thomas's literary labors, and their significant influence within London's intellectual circles.

The editorial project was meticulously assembled by a team of scholars committed to recovering the depth of the Carlyles' marriage and their exchanges with the most prominent thinkers of the nineteenth century. By presenting these letters in their original, unbowdlerized forms alongside exhaustive scholarly apparatus, the designers and editors aimed to move beyond the filtered versions previously published by Victorian contemporaries. It is widely considered an essential reference work for historians and literary critics interested in the domestic and intellectual history of the mid-Victorian era.
