The Collected Papers of Frederic William Maitland

Frederic William Maitland, the nineteenth-century Downing Professor of the Laws of England at Cambridge, is widely regarded as the father of modern legal history. His original papers were initially compiled and published in three volumes in 1911 by H.A.L. Fisher, serving as an essential repository for scholars interested in the evolution of English law, constitutional history, and the intricacies of the Domesday Book.

This 2010 edition from Nimble Books acts as a modern archival reprint of those foundational scholarly texts. Designed to make Maitland's dense, analytical prose accessible to a new generation of legal historians, the collection maintains the integrity of his original research while presenting it in a standardized format. It reflects the enduring interest in Maitland's methodological rigor and his pioneering use of public records to interpret the medieval legal landscape.
