The Kline-Carey measuring scale fer free-hand drawing ..

The Kline-Carey Measuring Scale for Free-Hand Drawing was published by The Johns Hopkins Press in 1923 as part of an effort to introduce standardized psychological assessment into the American public school curriculum. Authored by Linus Ward Kline and Gertrude L. Carey, the project was rooted in the burgeoning educational psychology movement of the early 20th century, which sought to move away from purely subjective grading toward empirical measurement of student performance and artistic progress.

The scale was designed as a tool for teachers to objectively rank students' free-hand sketches against a set of predetermined criteria and visual benchmarks. By providing a structured rubric for quality, composition, and technique, the authors aimed to remove teacher bias and ensure consistency in art instruction. While it was adopted by several school districts during the experimental period of the 1920s, it eventually faded from common use as educational theories shifted toward more expressive and less prescriptive approaches to children's art.
