Where it came from
Published by Prestel in 2000, The Land of Ludwig II explores the architectural legacy and psychological landscape of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The book serves as a visual and historical record of the extravagant palaces the monarch commissioned during the late 19th century, including Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, and Herrenchiemsee. It was released to provide a comprehensive scholarly overview for those interested in the intersections of 19th-century royal patronage, architectural excess, and the enduring mythos surrounding the 'Fairytale King.'
Author Peter Oluf Krückmann curated the volume to capture the romanticism and theatricality of Ludwig’s projects, often highlighting the tension between the king's reclusive personal obsessions and the public grandeur of his construction efforts. As part of Prestel’s tradition of high-quality art and travel documentation, the book is noted for its evocative photography and archival focus. It was received as a definitive reference for cultural historians and travelers drawn to the specific aesthetic of Bavarian neo-romanticism.
