The Mahabharata of Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa, Book 3, Part 1

This edition is part of a modern reprint series of the seminal 19th-century English translation of the Mahabharata, originally rendered by Kisari Mohan Ganguli between 1883 and 1896. Published under the auspices of IndyPublish in 2007, this volume specifically presents the first portion of the Vana Parva, or the Book of the Forest, which details the years of exile spent by the Pandava brothers.

The original translation remains a cornerstone of Indological studies, as it was the first complete prose rendering of the epic into English. By making this monumental Sanskrit text accessible to a wider audience, Ganguli sought to preserve the cultural and philosophical nuances of the ancient poem, though his prose style reflects the formal, slightly archaic literary conventions prevalent in the late Victorian era.
