The new Annie Dennis cook book

The New Annie Dennis Cook Book was published in 1905 by the Mutual Publishing Company in Atlanta, Georgia. It stands as a significant artifact of Southern culinary history, authored by Annie E. Dennis, a prominent Black cook and caterer of the era. The book was created to formalize the recipes and techniques used by the Black domestic labor force that defined the Southern table, providing a rare and valuable bridge between oral traditions and the printed culinary canon of the early twentieth century.

The design of the book reflects the utilitarian focus of the period, prioritizing instructional clarity over elaborate illustration. Dennis intended the work to serve as a practical guide for both experienced cooks and novices, emphasizing ingredients and methods common to the region. It was received as a noteworthy contribution to regional literature, distinguishing itself by capturing the expertise of a Black professional who occupied a central role in the domestic economy of the post-Reconstruction South.
